The Summer Book

2024

The Summer Book is a 2024 film adaptation of Tove Jansson's beloved novel, directed by Charlie McDowell. The film portrays the evolving relationship between a young girl, Sophia, and her grandmother as they spend a summer together on a secluded island in the Gulf of Finland. Through their shared experiences, the narrative delicately explores themes of life, death, and the passage of time.

The film premiered at BFI London Film Festival.

DOP Sturla Brandth Grøvlen shoots the Finnish landscape like picture postcards, conveying an idyllic childhood summer through shimmering waters and lavender sunsets.
Philip Bagnall, Next Best Picture

Rebel Unit created naturalistic VFX shots, including waves, a storm sequence, and a digitally enhanced lighthouse. We ensured that the visuals matched the film’s 1970s setting, blending seamlessly with its poetic and nostalgic tone.
